With traditional training, you teach a single trained response to a single specific event example. In concept training you teach a broad concept which gives the dog the tools for them to make the right decisions for themselves in any given situation.
There are lots of different concepts which you can teach your dog and they all help build different skills such as:
• Proximity – the ability to be close to you
• Confidence – the ability to do something new or something scary
• Engagement – the ability to hold focus on something
• Calmness – the ability to relax and do nothing
• Impulse control – the ability to manage the urge to do something
This is not a complete list but gives you an idea on how we shape behaviours. Concepts look at giving dogs the tools to utilise and make good decisions in a wide range of circumstances. Developing these concepts, enables your dog to cope with a wide range of situations.
Concepts are easy to teach. We will give at least 3 games to develop each concept, this allows flexibility with you and your dog. Using games ensures that both you and your dog enjoy training together making it less stressful, developing and strengthening the relationship between you and your dog.
